 avis-the-greenest-car-rental-company About the Community

Social responsibility is an ongoing process which requires the attention and input of all organisations and individuals, to make a difference to people and places where the need is greatest.

Ever since the inception of our new democracy in 1994, South Africans as a nation have become more aware of the need to embrace the change and provide assistance to those in need. Our country has hundreds of communities in dire need of upliftment and provision of basic resources.

As an organisation, Avis has heard the call for help by many of our citizens and our Avis Cares program has taken on a host of projects to assist with the upliftment of our local communities. What makes the Avis Cares program so special is the immense support it receives from its Brand Ambassadors, who have signed up as volunteers and give unselfishly of their own time, energy and money toward the program.

Below is a list of community upliftment projects that Avis and its Brand Ambassadors have driven and worked on, to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than others.

Western Cape warms hearts on a cold winters day

E-News recently broadcast an insert on “Huis Jabes”, a safe house in Parow for abused mothers and children. Huis Jabes provides abused mothers and their children with a safe, homely environment, love, guidance and hard work. These mothers are assisted to become self-sufficient again in a secure environment. This story touched the hearts of many of our Avis Brand Ambassadors and in no time the request for assistance was circulated to all Avis staff based at the Cape Town Airport and Off-Airport branches in Cape Town.

In the space of about two weeks, Avis Brand Ambassadors managed to collect 7 large boxes of groceries, which was then delivered to a very grateful Dina Koen and Elize Smith of Huis Jabes. We would like to thank all of our Brand Ambassadors for assisting us in this cause by opening their pockets and their hearts to make a difference to the people at Huis Jabes

Avis sponsors Soweto Equestrian Centre "Grooms" course

“The Grooms’ course held at the Soweto Equestrian Centre was started as a result of an urgent need amongst some of the students who were doing the farrier and/or saddle making courses conducted by World Horse Welfare (WHW) to be trained in how to handle a horse. Ten students participated this year in the six day course which had the following subjects:

1. Basic Horse Behaviour;
2. How to groom a horse; and
3. Basic stable yard operations.

The Grooms course which is attended by the students undertaking the farrier or saddlemaking courses (which take place in four modules over a year) is held in two tranches of three days. Enos Mafokate and Brett Fuller from the Soweto Equestrian Foundation conducted the course and at the end of the course the students were examined by Dr Wetsi Moloi and Diane Pieterse. From this year’s group of students, Errence Mabela was the best student and Malibongwe Mkuzwa, the next best student.

The Grooms course was made possible with the sponsorship of AVIS and the donation of grooming equipment by WHW.”

Avis donates mattresses and mattress covers

The Port Elizabeth Brand Ambassadors surprised the Creche of the The New Testament of Christ Ministries on 09April when they dropped off mattresses and mattress covers, toys, scrap paper, empty carlton rolls (arts and crafts use) and easter eggs. The children and teachers were very excited when they received all these items as it was a total surprise.

The mattress covers are made out of our old Avis uniforms. Double bonus, the children have a soft mattress to sleep on and the mattress covers can be removed for washing.

Avis sponsors WMACA with a vehicle

Avis has sponsored WMACA (Women and Men against Child Abuse) with a vehicle in Gauteng. Our Brand Ambassadors were requested to bring in teddies in order for us to attempt to fill the vehicle and WMACA would do a teddy drop at the Teddy Clinic. In true Avis style, our Brand Ambassadors did not disappoint and we had a FANTASTIC response and we were able to fill the vehicle with teddies and groceries.

Tania Otto from WMACA emailed us the following this morning: "the food parcels are going to a family who lost their father, their house and everything they own in a flash flood during the long weekend. So I assure you that your contribution is very much appreciated and has made a huge difference in the lives of a young woman and two little children."

Forest Town school picnic

Each year, the school recognizes the hard work done by the kids from the winning house by holding an annual picnic. The merits are earned not only for school work, but for good manners, support of other children in their classes, progress in occupational, speech and physiotherapy, helpfulness to teachers etc. This event is a highlight for the children. Many of the kids seldom go out except to come to school because of the logistical difficulties of access to public transport (i.e. no taxi will take a child in a wheelchair). However, each year’s picnic is totally dependent on finding sponsors as there is no budget for this sort of activity at all. Avis sponsored the lunch packs for the 70 children and care givers.

The party was held at the Equestrian centre in Soweto and was a huge success. Enos Mafokate was Santa and he was led in with an “Avis” painted horse. The children were so excited and painted a lovely banner expressing their appreciation for the gifts.

Team Avis Bedrace!

Sunday, 05 September 2010, it was a hot and sunny day at the Zwartkops race track in Centurion. The stage was set for the much anticipated race of the year!

08H30 and TEAM AVIS (represented by the Northern Region) was on the starting grid and revving to go with our participants barely able to contain themselves amidst all the hype.

The Bedrace is an annual event coordinated by the Midrand roundtable. Teams consist of 5 members, 1 “patient” who has to remain on the bed and 4 team mates that push the patient around a 3.5km racetrack! Beds are “dressed up” according to preselected themes. In true tradition of who AVIS are and what we do our beds were dressed up as a T5 Bus and a Mk1 golf.
